It is with great love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Wretha D. Catlin (née Chester), who passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, at the age of 94. Wretha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend whose warmth and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Wretha was born in Harrisburg, Illinois on August 10, 1930, to Cecil and Eva Chester. As the eldest of their children, Wretha embraced the role of caretaker with love and dedication. She grew up in Harrisburg and cherished her memories of small-town life, often reminiscing about the simpler times. Wretha's life was a testament to strength, resilience, and kindness, always looking out for those around her.
Throughout her life, Wretha enjoyed reading and was an avid book lover. She also had an extraordinary love for children, always finding joy in spending time with babies and young ones. Her connection to her grandchildren was particularly special, and she enjoyed sharing with them the memories of the hikes she and her late husband, Jim Catlin, used to take in their youth in Harrisburg.
Wretha was married to Jim Catlin for almost 50 years, and together they built a life filled with love and devotion. She was an integral part of Jim’s journey as he pursued his dental degree, and she was proud to raise their three children—Marilyn, Eva, and Jim. She was always there for her family, providing unwavering support and a loving presence.
Wretha’s legacy lives on in her children and the generations that follow. She is survived by her children: Marilyn (Luke) Kennedy, Eva (Doru) Marcusiu, and Jim (Kathy) Catlin; her grandchildren: Ashley (Nate) Makdad, Jordan (Amanda) Kennedy, Tyler (Kelly) Barger, Gwen (Roman) Korzhynskyi, Ian (Milena) Marcusiu, and Alex (Daniella) Marcusiu; and her great-grandchildren: Austin Barger, Nora Makdad, Brodyn Barger, Luke Makdad, Patrick Makdad, and Laith Barger. Her family was the heart of her life, and she took immense pride in watching them grow and thrive.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Wretha is survived by her sisters Shirley Seggebruch and Benita Rybicki, as well as nieces, nephews, and her dear lifelong friend, Lila Shrader. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Jim Catlin.
Together again in peace, they now watch over their family from above.
A celebration of Wretha’s life for family and immediate friends will be announced at a later date
