William Carter

William B. Carter, son of the late Edward T. and Lucille Foster Carter, passed away April 24, 2017 at Mason Pt. Sullivan, Illinois after a brief illness. Bill was born November 7, 1931 in Danville, the third of eight children. Bill was in the Navy Reserve and later had two years of active duty (1949-1954). Bill graduated from Danville High School in 1950. He married Saundra Leash-deceased, and they had five children: James, Michael, Paul, Robert and Joyce Carter Doss. Bill had ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Bill had one brother and six sisters: Eva Carter, Pat (Tom) Wilson both deceased, Shirley (Fred- deceased) Leibach, Sona (Don-deceased) Hubartt, Judtih (Irvin) Story, Sally (Mike) Motenko, Alan (Marianne) Carter, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill leaves behind a very special friend, Margaret Searing. Bill graduated from Danville Area Community College in 1974 with an Associate's degree, from Sangamon State in 1976 with a BA degree and an M.A. degree in 1979. Mr. Carter had his own Family Counseling Service in Springfield, Illinois until his retirement. He was a licensed pilot, and in previous years had worked for G.E. and Metropolitan Insurance. Bill was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church on Bowman Ave, Danville. Mr. Carter was known in Springfield and Danville (where he retired) as a volunteer. Starting when he was in the navy, he gave blood on a regular basis. He volunteered at church, Faith in Action-leading two exercise groups, coached basketball and baseball, Boy Scouts, devotional leader at The Key Club Adult Day Care and the Lutheran Apartments as well as numerous other places. Bill was a health enthusiast, he both attended and gave many lectures on health. He walked and exercised daily. One thing Bill enjoyed and took pride in was participating in the Senior Olympics held in Springfield. He participated until two years ago and won numerous ribbons for first and second place. Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion Danville Il. 61834 on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 9-11 a.m. with a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Reverend Michael Heidlel will be officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
