William Buchanan

William J. Buchanan, 82, passed away on January 19, 2009. A resident of Danville, Dr. Buchanan was born in Metropolis, Illinois. He was the son of Lewis and Mabel Buchanan. He married Eva Mae Foss on December 13, 1953 and she survives. He is further survived by his two daughters, Sandra Buchanan (Gary) of Warsaw, IN and Lisa Kewley (Richard) of Appleton, WI; grandchildren Elizabeth and Ryan Hann, Eve and Nicholas Kewley, and Alicia McCanna. Dr. Buchanan attended grade and high school in Golconda and Metropolis, Illinois. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the army until the end of World War II, at which time he was serving as a sergeant in the anti-aircraft division. Following the war, he attended Ripon College in Wisconsin and completed his degree at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Dr. Buchanan began practicing optometry in Metropolis in 1952. In 1962 he moved his family to Danville and joined Dr. Hogan in the practice at Chittick Optical. He later purchased the business and it became known as Buchanans Chittick Optical Service. Dr. Buchanan was a member of the American Optometric Association, Illinois Optometric Association, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Danville Rotary, Danville Country Club, Danville Tennis Club and a former Board member of Danville Downtown. Bill was devoted to his family and they were his main focus throughout his life. He looked forward to going to work every day and very much enjoyed his years as an optometrist. He was an avid competitor in both tennis and golf, which he played well into his retirement years. Visitation for Dr. Buchanan will be held from 2 to 4 pm on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville with a funeral service following at 4 pm with Pastor Daniel Fienen officiating.
