Kingman, Ind. - William "Bill" C. Purple, 85, of rural Kingman, passed away at 1:40 a.m. EDT Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Waters of Covington in Covington, Indiana. He was born February 25, 1928 in Fountain County, Indiana, the son of the late Albert Z. and Cathryn F. Witsman Purple. He married Margaret Ruth Gebhart on September 11, 1950 in Eugene, Indiana. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2001. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Guinn of Orlando, Florida; Bonnie Oilar and Tammy Purple both of Kingman, Indiana; one son, Michael(Melanie)Purple of Reno, Nevada; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; four sisters, Elva Bailey of Covington, Indiana; Frances(Eldon)Quick of Rantoul, Illinois; Betty(Don)Scheurich of Attica, Indiana and Shirley Craft of Danville, Illinois; one brother, Harlan(Mary)Purple of Covington; two sister in laws, Joan(Tom)Axtell of Eugene, Indiana and Marilyn(Frank)Whittington of Kingman, Indiana and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by one brother, Wilmur Purple. Bill attended Covington High School. He formerly worked at Hegg Lumberyard and Abernathy Construction, both in Covington, Indiana and later worked and retired from Covington High School as a janitor. Bill was a member of the Kingman Sons of the American Legion Post 384. He enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards, fishing and mowing. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EDT Thursday, September 26, 2013 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Jon Overbey; Burial: Eugene, Cemetery in Eugene, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
