William 'Art' Arthur Petty

William "Art" Arthur Petty, 80, of Covington, left this world to enter his Heavenly home on February 13, 2023. He was born on January 11, 1943, the son of Arthur and Viola (Smith) Petty in Terre Haute, IN. He was united in marriage to Helen Schafer on December 30, 1967 and together raised their two sons, Jim (Robyn) Petty of Covington and Scott (Jennifer) Petty of Attica, all of whom will miss him. He is also survived by his two sisters, Viola Branson and Susan (Rick) Fassino, both of Bedford, IN; his two grandchildren, MaCenzie and Ethan Petty, both of Attica; his step granddaughters, Meghann (Cory) Carrigan, Marissa (Casey) Rice, both of Lafayette, IN; his step grandsons, Grady Carrigan and Carson Carrigan, both of Lafayette, IN; his sister-in-law, Cathy Cook of Terre Haute, IN; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Vern Cook; and special friend, Jim Dunbar. Art acquired his Bachelors degree in Biology from Indiana State University in 1965 and later earned his Masters degree in Education. He taught Industrial Arts and Biology for thirty-five years in school. He retired in 2000 from Benton Central Jr. Sr. High School after teaching Biology for twenty-eight years. Art loved his job and loved his students and loved Biology. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. A celebration of Arts life will be held at 3:00pm (EST), Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Covington, Indiana 420 3rd St. Covington, Indiana 47932 with Pastor Rob Robbins and Pastor Tony DeMoss officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Sunday prior to his service at the funeral home. As per his wishes, he will be accorded cremation rites. Memorial donations may be given in his name to National Wildlife Federation or to Illiana Antique Power Association.
