Vermilion - Willard F. Glassford, 88, of Danville passed away on February 15, 2017 at Illiana VA in Danville, Illinois. He was born on February 10, 1929, in Danville, Illinois to George F. and Pearl (Cook) Glassford. He married Betty M. Whitehead on December 27, 1958, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Willard was known by many of his friends as "Willie" or "Bill". He was preceded in death by his parents, George F. and Pearl Glassford, sister; Marjorie L. Thornton, brother-in-law; Bernard E. "Banney" Thornton, and several aunts and uncles. Also his devoted wife of 55 years, Betty Mae Glassford. Survivors include several nephews and nieces; G. Joseph Peto of Danville, J. Kent Peto of Arizona, Michael (Marjorie) Thornton of Louisiana, Brenda Sue (Kenny) Jackson of Danville, Randall (Debbie) Thornton of Kendallville, Indiana, Barbara (Richard) Iverson of Danville, Willard Thornton of Danville, Rocky (Cathy) Thornton of Georgetown, Gerald Thornton of Champaign, and Todd (Tamara) Thornton U.S. Army. Willard joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950, during the Korean War, serving a large share of his enlistment in the 13th Air Force on Clark Field in the Philippines. He separated from active duty as a T/Sgt. At Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, Il., in 1954. Willard was a graduate of Danville High School, 1946, and attended the University of Illinois. His formative work experience started with Montgomery Ward's in Danville, and gradually veered into the credit-merchandising Service Field. His over forty years of experience and responsibility included, Executive Vice President of All America Service Corp. (IC Industries Company), Credit Sales Manager for Appliance Buyers Credit Corp., Assistant Treasurer of Ohio State Federal Savings and Loan Association and ended his career as a Financial and Insurance Manager for Bullock Garage's Springfield, Ohio Eastern Division office in January 1994. Willard was friendly, and a person who touched many lives. An avid reader, enjoyed all sports and often exhibited a sense of humor. He often wished to be remembered for his uncompromising work ethic and commitment to quality. Too, although he traveled and resided in several states, retained his membership at the Second Church of Christ in Danville. Memorials may be made in Willard's name to the Second Church of Christ in Danville. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 11:00 am at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N. Vermilion St. A visitation will be an hour prior.
