Wayne Cunningham

Danville - Wayne Cunningham died at home with his wife by his side, holding his hand, early in the morning on March 9, 2017 at the age of 85. Born on March 18, 1931, Wayne was the youngest child of Claude and Jennie (Claypool) Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers. He married Barbara "Jean" Drews, his childhood sweetheart, on September 3, 1949 in Danville, Illinois and they celebrated 67 years of marriage together. Wayne is survived by his wife, Jean; their three children, Michael (Janet), Ronald (Brenda) and Susan (David Landau); four grandchildren, Lee, Chad, Tara and John; and 12 great-grandchildren. When his sons were in the Boy Scouts, he became the Assistant Boy Scout Master of Troop 6. He taught his daughter to play tennis. He regularly told his wife and children he loved them. Wayne served in the Navy in 1951 and was honorably discharged later that year due to a heart condition. He worked at McEnglevan's (1950-1955), Barker's Shoe Store (1955-1960), Sholem's Shoe Store (1960-1965), Rockford Life Insurance (1965-1980) and Sentry Insurance (1980-1993). After two years of retirement, he became a school bus driver for Danville District 118. He truly enjoyed driving the school bus from 1995-2011. We will all miss you. We love you. May God give you peace and a body free of pain. Wayne accepted the Lord as his Savior decades ago. According to his wishes, he will be cremated and a private family service will be held prior to his burial at the Danville VA National Cemetery.
