Walter Wally Silver passed away at home on Wednesday March 13, 2024. He was 91 years young. Wally was born in Urbana, IL but raised on the family farm north of Philo, IL. He was the third of seven children born to Frank and Mabel (Hartz) Silver.
He graduated from the first graduating class of Unity High School in 1950. After high school, Wally served in the Army before returning to the family farm and working as a construction supervisor. He then joined the Maintenance Department for Champaign County where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 40/8, the Moose Lodge, and the Mahomet United Methodist Church. Wally met the first love of his life, Mary Gerhart at the Villa Grove Moose Lodge. They married in 1975. After her passing in 2003, Wally was blessed with a second love of his life, Marline Kesler. They were devoted companions for 17 years until she passed away in 2023.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 nephew, 1 great-nephew, and 1 great-great-nephew.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Rita Rafinski (Tom) of Burr Ridge, IL; sister, Connie Harrison of Winnebago, IL; many nephews; a niece; grand nieces and nephews; great-grand nephews and nieces; great-great grand nephews and nieces; as well as numerous members of Marlines family.
Wally was a quiet man with a witty sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling with his partners and especially loved spending time at their cabin in Indiana and wintering in Florida. He was an avid fisherman and taught many younger generations how to fish. He was a regular attendee at the Mahomet McDonalds Coffee Club and the Arbys Supper Club. Wally will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Mahomet United Methodist Church,1302 E. South Mahomet Rd, Mahomet, IL 61853 on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, IL following the funeral. All are invited to a luncheon at the church following the burial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mahomet United Methodist Church or the America Legion Honor Guard.
