Danville- Walter F. "Phil" Carter, 92, of Danville IL passed away at 12:45 AM on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Heartland Healthcare in Champaign. He was born September 28, 1920 in Mt. Vernon Tennessee to Walter F. Sr. and Georgia M. Murray Carter. He married Carol J. Anderson on November 17, 1973 in Danville IL, she survives. Other survivors include two sons Michael F. (Mary) Carter of Pauline KS and Scott P. (Pam) Carter of Topeka KS; two grandchildren Amber (Matt) Moore and Dustin Carter, and a great-grandchild, Ethan Lane; one brother William E. Carter of Ashland, KY; and a sister Laura Youngblood of Kalamazoo MI. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Ruth Isaacs and Mary Smith, and a grandchild, Anthony "Tony" Carter. Phil served in the US Army from December 1, 1939 to June 25, 1945. As a Tech Sgt. In WWII, Phil was stationed in Panama, and was one of the first in the US Army to use Radar Technology. He worked at the Hyster Company as a Mill Wright until his retirement after working over 30 years. He was a Mason and member of Anchor Lodge # 980, a member of the Danville Consistory, the Gao Grotto, the American Legion Post #210, and a member of the Order of Kentucky Colonels. Phil also enjoyed building stages and backdrops for Sweet Adeline's and watching his wife Carol perform with them. A celebration of Walter's life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Officiating services will be Raymie Gordon. Entombment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 6 PM on Friday, October 5, 2012 at the funeral home.
