Walter Dean Grimes

Oakwood Walter Dean Grimes, 79, of Oakwood passed away at Heritage Health Care in Danville on June 4, 2020 at 1:25 AM.

Walter was born on May 31, 1941 the son of William T. and Mary R. (Clapp) Grimes in Oakwood. He married Nancy Haskell on July 8, 1961 in Danville and she survives.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nancy Grimes of Oakwood, two sons, Dean (Kelly Cundiff) Grimes of Rossville, IL and Dan (Carri) Grimes of Seymour, IN, one brother, Bob (Nancy) Grimes of Oakwood, IL, three grandchildren, Megan Grimes of Fishers, IN, Tom (Wendy) Grimes of Milford, CT and Gavin Grimes of Seymour, IN as well as several nieces and nephews.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, one daughter-in-law, Dianne Grimes, two sisters, Darlene Miller and Ruth Goodwin Powell, three brothers-in-law, Ted Miller, Tom Goodwin and Carl Powell.

Walter was a member of the Newtown Hebron United Methodist Church and farmed his entire life. He served as a Trustee on the Oakwood Township Board for over 35 years, was a past Newtown School Board Member, a past 4-H Leader for the Newtown Bobcats for over 20 years, past member of the Oakwood Lions Club was a current member of the Oakwood Historical Society and Illiana Antique Tractor Association and owns two antique tractors which he was very proud of.

A Private Family Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 8, 2020 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N. Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Patti Wise and Jessica LeCrone will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. A Private Family visitation will be held from 10:00 11:00 AM on Monday, June 8, 2020 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the Newtown Hebron United Methodist Church or the Oakwood High School FFA Program.
