W. John Shane Sr., 81, passed away July 26, 2023 at his home. Born in Danville, he was the son of Wolford M. Shane and Amelia Raimer Shane who are deceased. His sister Susan Shane Herriott also pre-deceased him. He married his best friend and love of his life Susan Strand Shane in 1966 and she survives.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Susan and children, Wolford John Shane Jr, Pamela Shane German (Dan) and Steven Donald Shane. He was blessed to be a grandfather to Donald Keith and Molly Elizabeth Shane, Lauren Amelia and Michael Anthony German, and Sylvie Lucille and John (Mack) McKee Shane.
John was blessed to have many friends and colleagues through his many activities in the community, and his gift was the ability to make friends and nurture friendships which he did by being kind to family, friends and himself. He considered this his greatest blessing.
After college, he became the fourth generation of Shanes to be part of Wolford Cannon Hoecker Insurance agency. He became president of the agency after his fathers death in 1974. The agency was purchased by Old National Bank in 2001 and he retired in 2006.
He cared deeply for his community and strived to make it a better place to live. This was evident by his civic involvement which included being president of the Danville Area Community College for two separate terms; First Chairman of Provena/USMC Foundation; Campaign Chair and Chairman of the Board for United Way; Treasurer of Springhill Cemetery for over 20 years; Member of Vermilion Healthcare Foundation for over 20 years and served as Chairman for 2 years; Served as President of Danville Country Club; Received AMBUCS Danville First Citizen Award in 1999. He served as President of the Danville Jaycees and Junior Achievement, and also served as President of Noon Rotary Club.
Johns favorite sport was golf. He played for Danville High School and Bradley University. He won the Danville Country Club championship 7 times and the Inter-Club tournament 3 times. He played in the Senior State Amateur and the State Amateur several times, making the cut a few times.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 4, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church Danville, Illinois, 100 N Franklin Street, Danville, IL 61832. Chaplain Andrea Beyke will officiate. Inurnment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 PM on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, IL 61834.
