Virginia L. Witt The most loving of mothers, grandmothers and wives, Virginia Mary (Lynch) Witt passed away Sunday morning, July 9, 2017, in Champaign. She was 93. Born on Jan. 9, 1924, and raised in Southwestern Pennsylvania, she met her husband, Frank E.L. Witt, in Pittsburgh when they both worked at Westinghouse, a story she often loved to tell. They moved to Illinois in 1950 when Mr. Witt accepted a position in the Physics Department of the University of Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1997 after 51 years of marriage. After raising her seven children as a full-time partner with her husband, Mrs. Witt became a life member and then longtime employee of Weight Watchers. She was a woman of great faith and was active in the Church of the Brethren in Champaign as a board member and lay minister. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Witt was preceded in death by her parents, John J. and Elizabeth Lynch, four brothers, five sisters, a son-in-law, Richard E. Davis, and one great-grandson, Emerson A. Trueblood. Her sister, Patty Chason, of Albany, Ga., survives. Her children, John (Wanda) of Odessa, Texas, Candace Davis of Oregon, Wis., Connie (Jim) Anderson of Madison, Wis., Richard (Jackie) of Champaign, Thomas (Rebecca) of Naples, Fla., James of Columbus, Ohio, and Margaret (Todd) Trueblood of Appleton, Wis., survive. Sixteen grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren - who knew her as Nannie -- also survive. She will be missed as well by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, many of whom knew her as Aunt Jean from her childhood nickname. Mrs. Witt will be remembered by her extensive extended family as a truly caring, empathetic woman who would listen, advise and share their worries and joys. She loved children and infused that love in her children. By turns silly or stern, as the situation required, she made certain her children knew their worth and how much she wanted them to be successful. Her humorous promises ("I'll dance at your wedding!") and threats ("I'll snatch you baldy-headed!") still echo in her children's minds. In lieu of memorials, hug your mother and your children and cherish the precious moments. A Celebration of Virginia's life will be held 11:00 am on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home, 710 N Neil st, Champaign. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the funeral home.
