Virginia Rae Cowell

GEORGETOWN - Virginia Rae Cowell, 91, went to be the Lord at 11:10am, Thursday, May 31st, 2007, while at her daughters home in Westville. She was born in Albion, IL, on August 8th, 1915, the daughter of Rufus and Lalia (Reid) Hocking, both deceased. On August 5th, 1940, she was married to Jesse Laverne Cowell who passed away on July 11th, 1990. She is survived by: her sons, Myron (Betty) Cowell of Alamogordo, NM, & Mylon (Loretta) Cowell of Westville, IL; her daughters, Karen Price of Westville, IL, & Joanne (Gary) Gondry of Westville, IL; her grandchildren, Tamara (Billy) Barrier, Craig (Heidi) Cowell, Keith (Lisa) Cowell, Matthew (Erica) Cowell, Eric Cowell, Lynette (J.J.) Evans, Douglas Cowell, Carol (Tim) Polletti, Fred (Michelle) Burks, Lisa Burks, Mark Burks, Darren (Lori) Gondry, & Marissa Gondry; and her fourteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. Mrs. Cowell was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a bachelors degree in Education. She was a teacher at various Georgetown schools for 30 years and even after her retirement continued to help throughout the Georgetown and Westville School Districts. She was active in Gideons. She was a part of the Illinois Education Association of Vermilion County and the Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the First Church of Christ of Georgetown and also taught Sunday school. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening. She enjoyed being a teacher and especially enjoyed being with her family. Virginias life will be celebrated at 10:00am, Monday, June 4th, 2007, at Sunsets Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, 200 E West St, Georgetown. Steve Rutter will officiate. A time for remembrance for family and friends will be held from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, Sunday, June 3rd, 2007, at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest in Forest Park Cemetery in Georgetown. Memorials may be given in her name to: St. Judes Childrens Hospital.
