Newburgh, Ind. -- Virginia Dowers Shelato, 84, formerly of Elberfeld and Cayuga, Indiana and a resident of Woodlands Convalescent Center in Newburgh, passed away at 9 a.m. CDT Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Woodlands Covalescent Center. She was born August 15, 1922, in Cayuga, Indiana, the daughter of the late Clifford E. and Hazel Belle Dallas Dowers. Survivors include: one sister-in-law, Catherina Dowers; nieces and nephews, Kevin Dowers, Scott(CathyDowers, Sheryl(Lowell Coleman)Dowers Werkmeister, Teresa(Jesse)Dowers Carrillo, Susan(Ray)Dowers Roehler, Benjamin(Debra)Dowers, Mark(Brenda)Dowers, Jimmy(Veatrice)Dowers, Leslie(Patricia)Dowers, Glenda(Mike)Lomax, Doris Dowers and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Glenn, Floyd, Elza and Orville Lee Dowers and several nieces and nephews. Virginia was formerly employed at the Morgan Canning Company and the Cayuga Paper Cup Factory both in Cayuga, Indiana; Columbia Stamping Company of Terre Haute, Indiana and the DuPont Factory in Newport, Indiana. The last several years being a homemaker. She was a member of the Way of the Cross Assembly of God Church in Brazil, Indiana. Virginia enjoyed tending to her flowers and spending time with her loving family. Funeral services: 3 p.m. EDT Saturday, April 11, 2009 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Jimmy C. Dowers; Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Friday, April 10, 2009 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Way of the Cross Assembly of God, 3010 East US Hwy 40, Brazil, Indiana 47834.
