Danville - Virginia D. vanBurk, 97, of Danville passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Hawthorne Inn of Danville. Born December 25, 1916 she was the daughter of Peter and Lorna Bush Gernand. On June 2, 1945 she married Louis G. vanBurk in Chicago, Illinois. He preceded her in death June 14, 2002. Mrs. vanBurk worked for the Navy as a civilian Office Supervisor in Chicago during World War II. She then worked for Midstates Wire as an Office Manager in Chicago, retiring from there. Mrs. vanBurk was an active member of Timothy Lutheran Church in Chicago for over 40 years, and also a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Orland Park. She enjoyed traveling, history, cooking and any time spent with her family. She lived her life with grace and strong moral sense that she instilled in others and family. For that she will always be remembered by those who were lucky enough to know and love her. She is survived by three sons, James (Susan) vanBurk of Oak Forest, Illinois, William (Yolande) vanBurk of Sedona, Arizona, and Richard M. (Linda) vanBurk of Rossville, Illinois; two brothers, Peter “Ted” Gernand of Potomac, Illinois and William (Phyllis) Gernand of Alvin, Illinois; three grandchildren, Amy (Stephen) Kobza of Tinley Park, Illinois, Scott vanBurk of Tinley Park, Illinois and Ashlee (Brian) Weidenburner of Rossville, Illinois; and four great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Alexander Kobza, and Dalton and Drew Weidenburner. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Betty Gernand. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 29th from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A service to celebrate the life of Virginia vanBurk will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 30th at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home in Danville. Pastor Don Borling will officiate. The Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
