Virginia Mae Smith, 94, of Danville, IL, passed away on May 22, 2019 in peace at the North Logan Nursing home in Danville.
Virginia was born on September 15, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to the late C. Ray Irvine and Nellie M. (Robinson) Irvine. She married Marden Douglas Smith on February 19, 1965. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1992.
She was also preceded in death by step-son Gary William Smith of Ocala, Florida; step-son in law John Cox of Danville; and step-son in-law Larry Crawford of Ankeny, Iowa.
Survivors include step-son Danny Richard (Sandy) Smith of New Zealand; step daughters Kathleen Sue Cox of Danville and Sharon Lynn Crawford of Ankeny, Iowa and step daughter in-law Sally Smith of Kernersville, NC.
Grandchildren include Jeremy Smith of York Haven, Pennsylvania; Sybil (John) Petrey of Kernersville, North Carolina; Emily Smith of New Zealand; Thomas Smith of New Zealand; John (Titia) Cox of St. Joseph, Illinois; Kris Crawford of Ankeny, Iowa; Joel (Rebecca) Crawford of Ankeny, Iowa.
Great grandchildren include Caitlynd Smith of York Haven, Pennsylvania; Ross and Alana Crawford of Ankeny, Iowa; Isla and Wyatt Petrey of Kernersville, North Carolina; Olivia and Everly Cox of St. Joseph, Illinois.
Virginia is also survived by many nieces and nephews and her beloved caretaker, Linda Day.
Virginia graduated from Danville High School and attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL and DACC in Danville. She was employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville for 37 years. At the time of her retirement, she was secretary for the Chief of Nursing Service. She was a member of the Danville United Church of Christ where she had served as secretary to the church council and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Virginia was an avid reader and she loved music, especially Broadway musicals. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching old movies. She loved her dog Molly and all dogs alike.
A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Park in the Chapel Mausoleum in Danville, Illinois, 3901 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Officiating will be Pastor Doug Knapp. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Danville. Memorial donations may be made to the Danville Library Foundation in Danville, Illinois.
