Cayuga, Ind. --Virgil T. Schutz, 96, of Cayuga, Indiana, formerly of Catlin, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 8:50 PM at West Central Community Hospital, Clinton, Indiana. He was born December 11, 1909 in Catlin, Illinois the son of the late Phillip and Pearl Redmond Schutz. He married Mary Ellen Taylor on December 24, 1941 in Catlin, Illinois. Mary passed away October 7, 1996. Also preceding in death are two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his children: Diana Schutz of Catlin, Illinois, Leonard K. (Anabella) Schutz of Trivoli, Illinois, Marilyn (Larry) Uplinger of Tangier, Indiana, Paula Jo (Ken) Broderick of Danville, Illinois and David (Robin) Schutz of Eugene, Indiana, twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a sister, Hazel Stephens of Danville, Illinois Virgil was a farmer. He also worked in coal mines and was a carpenter for Walsh Construction. He was instrumental in the building of the Fort Peck Dam located near Glasgow, Montana. Construction, authorized by FDR during the Depression, began in 1933 and completed in 1940. He was a lifetime member of the United Mine Workers of America. He attended the Bethel Methodist Church in Catlin as a young man. He was a history buff and enjoyed gardening, mushrooming, fishing and cooking. Most of all Virgil dearly loved spending time with his family. Services: 10 AM EDT, Saturday, June 24, 2006, at DeVerter Brothers Funeral Home, Cayuga, Indiana Officiating: Rev. Andy Spencer Burial: Oakridge Cemetery, Catlin, Illinois Visitation: 6 to 8 PM EDT Friday (June 23) at the funeral home.
