Virdie Smith

Virdie Smith, 82, of Champaign, passed away at 7:46 PM on Friday, October 2, 2015 at her home. She was born November 20, 1932 in Atwood, Tennessee, the daughter of Farris and Eva Porter Carter. She married Gene Smith on September 11, 1955 in Champaign. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Eugene (Velma) Smith of Champaign and Chad (Sadaka) Smith of Chicago; one brother, Curlie Carter of Milwaukee, Wisconsin ; one sister, Irene White of Dayton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Andre Taylor and Aden and Adrian Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Farris Carter Jr. and Cleatho Carter; and two sisters, Rosie M. Drake and Virginia Strayhorn. Virdie was a member of the New Foundation Baptist Church of Champaign. A celebration of the life of Verdie Smith will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 9th, 2015 at the New Foundation Missionary Baptist Church, 922 W. Eureka in Champaign. Rev. Nathan Williams Jr. will be officiating services. As per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Sunset Funeral Home, Champaign-Urbana Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
