Newport, Ind. - Violet May Aukerman of Newport, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on August 26, 2021 at the age of 86. Violet was born to Carlos and Katharyn Gunsalus on November 5, 1934 and grew up in the small town of Economy, Indiana with four siblings. She graduated from Economy High School in 1952 and then attended Reed Memorial Hospital radiology technician school where she went on to work until marrying her husband, Malcolm H. Aukerman in 1955.
Newport, Indiana became her home in 1956 where she built a loving and gracious home with her husband Malcolm. Mother to three children: Lisa (Jeff) Turner, Bruce (Nancy) Aukerman and David Aukerman, she instilled Christian values that would last a lifetime. The family was taught to be respectful, be kind to those around you, be steadfast in your convictions, and be helpful in times of need. These values remain engrained in the lives of her children to this day.
As Violet's children grew, she devoted more of her time to working as a legal secretary in her husband's law firm, where she worked for over 50 years. She enjoyed working in her church, assisting with vacation bible school, and being a Sunday school teacher to many of the young children in the community. An avid seamstress and baker, she always looked forward to passing on these skills to her grandchildren, especially around the time of 4-H where her peach pie recipe made it to the Indiana State fair. Violet had an artist's eye and created many hand-painted beautiful ceramics that remain a staple at Christmas time to be enjoyed by all.
The country life was treasured by Violet where she loved her hummingbirds, spring calves, stunning sunrises over the Wabash, and roaming deer. Her flower gardens were full of zinnias that drew colorful monarch butterflies. She loved seed saving her zinnias and would share with whomever loved flowers. Always wanting to see nature flourish, she tended a line of heirloom obedient flowers and poppies, maintained from her grandmother, that have now been passed down for five generations.
Violet is survived by her daughter, Lisa Turner; sons, Bruce Aukerman, and David Aukerman. Four grandchildren: Katharyn Turner, Matthew Turner, Hailey Aukerman, Emme Aukerman. Two great grandchildren; David Turner and Josiah Turner. One brother, David Gunsalus.
Violet is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Malcolm; one brother Joseph and two sisters Wanda and Janice.
Private graveside services were held by the family at Thomas Cemetery, Newport, Indiana. Officiating: Rev. Tim Bleigh.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vermillion County Christian Food Center. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana assisted the family with arrangements.
