Viola Mae Hancock, age 91, of Danville, passed away at 8:27 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at North Logan Health Care in Danville. She was born June 10, 1918 in Gessie, IN the daughter of William David and Ruby Viola (Huff) Niccum. Viola married Melvin Hancock on May 19, 1937 in Covington, IN. He preceded her in death. She is survived by her nephew: David (Carol) Niccum of Georgetown; three nieces: Karen Niccum of Angola, IN, Dwila (David) Queen of Danville, Gloria (Robert) Young of Danville; and three step-grandchildren: Mark A. Nickle, Larry Nickle and Sandy Baucom. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a step-daughter: Doris Nickle; four brothers: William Paul, Jacob Harold, Glenn, and Charles Niccum; and a special nephew: Ron Niccum. Viola spent her younger years raising her brothers after her mother passed away. She worked at Windbreaker and Kickapoo Sports Ware in Danville. She also worked out of her home doing upholstery. Viola loved to sew and travel. She will be missed by all that knew her. A celebration of the life of Viola Hancock will be held at 2 pm on Friday, January 15, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home of Danville with Pastor Steve Rutter officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oakhill Cemetery of Danville. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 pm on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Violas name to Operation Backpack in care of the First Church of Christ 503 North Main Street Georgetown, IL 61846.
