Vincent A. Koers

Vincent Koers - devoted husband, father of two, and friend to many peacefully passed away on November 3, 2023, in Danville Illinois, at the age of 82.

Vince was born to Herman and Edrie Koers in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 1, 1941. He attended Cathedral HS (Class of 1959) and then Marian College where he met the love of his life, Catherine "Kitty" Dorr. After their wedding in 1965, they later welcomed their son, Christopher Vincent Koers in 1966, and daughter, Kimberly Ann (Waters) in 1969.

Vince proudly served in the United States Army (Reserve) from 1964 to 1969. He served in a Military Intelligence unit before transferring to the STU BN (2111-03) hospital unit. This unit was instrumental in processing wounded soldiers coming back from the Vietnam conflict.

In his early career Vince worked for the Indiana State Highway Department (1962-1967) where he helped design the landscaping for several early interstate rest areas, and American Hoist & Derrick (1967-1973) where he traveled the country managing the installation and operation of mobile asphalt plants for state and federal road projects.

In 1974 Vince and Kitty relocated their family to Danville, Illinois where Vince worked at Sand-Tech / Core Lube Inc. for several years before settling into an industrial engineering job with General Motors. Vince would earn a BA in Management from University of Illinois, Springfield in 1983, and then go on to earn his MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1993.

During these years Vince was very active in his childrens lives. The family traveled extensively every year camping all over the country, towing their beloved 1966 Sears pop up camper. He participated in scouting, earning the Order of the Arrow as assistant Scout Master of Troop 396, served in the YMCA Indian Guides program, and helped start the Danville Area Soccer Association. Vince not only coached many youth soccer teams, which both his children participated in, but helped start, coached, and played on Danvilles adult traveling soccer team. He was extremely instrumental in the growth and success of youth soccer in the Danville area.

Upon retirement from General Motors in 2004, Vince and Kittys love of camping and traveling continued with international trips all over Europe, continued trips all over the US, and most of all, enjoying summer camping at their favorite spot in Raccoon Lake State Park, with their three beloved Yorkies Max, Baily, and Coco.

Vince was active in St. Paul Catholic church as well as many civic organizations to include the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the Danville Boat Club. He could always be found championing a cause or passionately working hard on something he truly believed in. His strong interest in environmental issues drove his research and engagement on several fronts, to include the disposition of coal ash, understanding the growing use of wind farms, and the negative effects of toxic chemical pollution and its impact on the surrounding community. Vince could often be found at Danville City Council and the Vermillion County Airport Board meetings. His interest in his community always drove his input into many issues he found important.

He was never far away from a warm cup of coffee and a great conversation with his friends. His kind manner and giving heart touched many people. Vince never met a stranger and was always interested in helping anyone in need, no matter what the circumstances.

He positively impacted many lives in so many ways and will be severely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Vince is survived by his wife Kitty of Danville, IL, son Christopher Koers (Molly) of New Braunfels, TX, daughter Kimberly Waters (Kevin) of Heyworth, IL, brothers Herman Koers Jr (Ruth) and Gehl Steven (Mary) Koers of Indianapolis, IN, and sisters Angela Lapadat of Indianapolis, IN, and Suzanna Heidloff of Grand Rapids, MI. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Brandon Dungan (Stephanie), Alix Winne, Amanda Crouch (Robert), Maddison Herp (Scott), Samantha Waters, Justin Koers (Meagan), and Conner Waters. Also surviving are eighteen great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Danville.

Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville on Friday November 10, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a rosary starting at 6:30 pm.

A funeral mass will be held at St Paul Catholic Church in Danville on Saturday November 11, 2023, at 9:00 am followed by a brunch get together at the Moffitt Center.

Following an independent procession to Indianapolis, a grave side service will be held at Calvary Cemetery Saturday November 11, 2023, at 3:00 pm.
