Danville - Grothe Victor Raymond Grothe, 88, of Danville IL., passed away at 9:55 pm on Friday June 21, 2013 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville IL. He was born on March 17, 1925, to John and Orpha (Kelley) Grothe in Boyleston IL. Raymond married Margaret ElNora Johnson on May 1, 1949 in Fairfield IL; they were married for 64 years. Raymond is survived by his daughter Martha (Randy) Williamson of Danville; son Bill Ray (Fianc Julie Townsend) Grothe of Philo IL.; grandchildren Rachel (Todd) Davis, Rob (Terra) Williamson and Chayton Grothe; and great-granddaughters Lauren Davis and Audrey Williamson. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Mary Reiss, one brother and one sister. A graduate of Fairfield High School in Fairfield IL, Raymond joined the United States Army and served with distinction during WWII in the European theatre where he received a gold star. After leaving the army Raymond found work as a boiler operator at the Chanute Air Force Base, he retired after 25 years of service. A long standing member of the East Park Church of Christ Raymond was known for his impersonation of a train whistle. He was an Illini Sports fan, especially in regards to their football team, and he always found time to watch the Kentucky Derby. Raymond will be remembered as a man who loved his family and will be missed by all those to knew him. A celebration of Raymond's life will be held at 11:30 am on Monday June 24, 2013 at the East Park Church of Christ in Danville with Minister Dennis Floyd officiating and burial at Danville National Cemetery at a later time. A visitation will be held prior to the service at the East Park Church from 10:00 to 11:30 am on Monday. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made in Raymond's name to the East Park Church of Christ.
