Veronica Panfilow Stephen, 78, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025.
Born on August 13, 1947, in Neuberg, Germany, she was the daughter of Nicolas and Maria Panfilow. Veronica married the love of her life, Robert Lynn Stephen of Georgetown, Illinois, and together they shared almost 50 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2017.
She is survived by her son, Jordan Christopher Stephen (Angie), and was a proud grandmother to Chase Alexander Stephen and Carter Richard Stephen.
Veronica spent her early childhood in Germany and France before immigrating with her family to the United States at the age of eight, eventually settling in the Chicago area. She quickly learned English, developing a lifelong love for reading and education. She graduated from Tuley High School (now Roberto Clemente Community Academy) in 1965.
Throughout her life, Veronica worked in a variety of positions, including several small businesses and an art supply store. While living in Chicago, she met Robert Stephen, the two were married in 1967, and settled in Robert’s hometown of Georgetown, Illinois. In 1970 they had their son, Jordan.
Veronica was deeply committed to continuing her education. She returned to school and earned an Associate’s Degree from Danville Area Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences from the University of Illinois, and went on to complete both a Master’s Degree in Education and a Doctorate from the University of Illinois. Her career in education included services with Danville District 118, St. Paul’s School, and later almost 20 years as a professor at Eastern Illinois University before she retired.
Veronica was known for her curiosity, intellect and creativity. She loved reading, learning, art and craft projects, and meaningful conversations. She and Robert shared a passion for artistic projects, travel, gardening, and spending time together. She was a lifelong sports fan who enjoyed college football, Formula 1 and Racing and the excitement of the Olympic Games.
Veronica was also active in her community, volunteering at the Historical Center, serving with the Georgetown Fair, and supporting the Danville Library. She cherished her family above all else, finding joy in teaching her grandchildren about art, ideas, and the world.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home’s Houghton Leasure Chapel, 200 E. West Street, Georgetown.
