Vern Brutlag, 70, of Potomac passed away Saturday January 19, 2008 at His residence with his wife by his side. Vern was born July 9, 1937 in Woodworth, Illinois son of Elvin and Sena Schuster Brutlag. He married Joyce Turner on June 5, 1987 in Danville. She survives along with his daughters: Brenda (Mark) Thomas, Dianne (Ray) Bailey, and Cheryl (Ben) Davis. Stepdaughter: Amy (Clifford) Hegg; Brothers: Norman (Cecilia) Brutlag, Kenny (Iris) Brutlag, Rick Brutlag, and Gerald (Brenda) Brutlag; Sisters: Lois (Bob) Mowrey, Joyce Bullock, and Judy (Robert) Jackson; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Vern attended schools in Clifton, IL, and after immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, he served from 1956-1961 as a Boilerman 3rd. Class. After being honorably discharged from the military, Vern worked at Tee Pak as a pipe fitter for 37 years until retiring in 2000. He was a member of Rossville Church of Christ for a number of years. Vern learned to tinker on street rods early in life from his father. Restoring street rods was a passion that he never gave up, restoring many for himself and helping countless people with their own. He was a founding father of the Vintage Rods Club in the Danville area. He enjoyed collecting guns, antiques, farm toys, flea markets, and auctions. Vern loved to spend time with his family, friends and most of all his beloved grandchildren & great grandchildren. A Celebration of Verns Life will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion St. Danville, IL Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Monday evening at the funeral home.
