Vera P. Carico

Danville Vera P. Carico, 97, of Crest Hill formerly of Danville lost her courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer at 3:20 PM on May 6, 2021 at Willow Falls Senior Living in Crest Hill, IL.

Vera was born on August 28, 1923 in Equality, IL the daughter of Jerome and Bernice (Downs) Barnett. She married Hubert Carico on June 24, 1978 in Danville, IL and he preceded her in death on March 4, 2003.

Survivors include her children, Ronald (Tillie) Wilkins of Apex, NC, Margaret (Mike) Perry of Jacksonville, IL, James (Sherry) Wilkins of Fairmount, IL, Terry (Marie) Wilkins of Gaylord, MI and Gail (Keith) Ashcraft of Crest Hill, IL, fifteen grandchildren, Nathan, Brandon, Sarah, Katie, Michael, Marc, Marty, Leigh Ann, Hilleary, Amanda, Hannah, Ryan, Benjamin, Amy and Sarah as well as twenty great grandchildren and a special cousin, Betty Barkman of Danville, IL.

Vera is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Hubert Carico.

Vera was a member of the Second church of Christ in Danville, graduated Danville High School Class of 1941 and a 1944 graduate of the St. Elizabeth Nursing School. After graduating, she served her country in the United States Army Nurse Corp from March of 1945 until January of 1947 and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

She retired from the Illiana Veterans Affair Medical Center in 1987 after 21 years of service to our veterans. She enjoyed spending her free time playing golf, reading, volunteering at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center and participating in the Nurses Alumni Association of St Elizabeth Nursing School.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 1:00 PM Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 N Vermilion St., Danville, Illinois 61834. Kiley Garrison will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 5:00 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at the funeral home.

It is kindly requested that those in attendance of the visitation or services wear a mask and practice social distancing.
