Timothy (Tim) Austin Berg 69, died peacefully in his Urbana home on June 27, 2022, surrounded by family. Tim was born March 9, 1953, in Ypsilanti MI and moved to Winnetka, IL at age 6 with his parents James & Dorothy and siblings Pamela, James II and Rodney, all of whom precede him in death. He is survived by his wife Mary (of 51 years), and his children Ian, whom he chose to adopt (Sarah), Jason (Kristin), Katey (Darin) and 8 grandchildren.
Tim loved entertaining, cooking, music, reading, playing golf, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and sharing all that he had. One of his bucket list items was to see the White Sox in spring training, which he got to do in March of this year. He loved making bread, especially Stollen at Christmas time and sharing loaves as gifts for family and friends. He was a collector of books, music, hats, rocks, condiments, and anything that brought a smile to his face.
Tim was a delivery truck driver in Chicago for many years before becoming an insurance agent for over 30 years until his retirement in 2020 to Urbana. He volunteered his time whenever and wherever possible, including church groups and committees, staffing mens weekends through Mankind Project, serving at homeless shelters, and helping with CSA distribution at Soila Gratia, a community garden in Urbana.
Tim believed in justice and working for equality. He was very involved in his church community, doing various tasks and joining several groups. Community was one of the most important places he felt he could contribute toward and make a difference through. In his younger days, he organized a walk out at New Trier High School to protest the shootings at Kent State. He was also involved in a Revolutionary group in Chicago, Rising Up Angry, in order to stand up for the inequality that was happening then, and now.
A quote he loved from Garrison Keillor; Some luck lies in not getting what you thought you wanted but getting what you have, which once you have got it you may be smart enough to see is what you would have wanted had you known. -Lake Wobegon Days
Tim was loved and admired by so many and will be missed by all who knew him.
A service will be held on Sunday September 18, 2022, at St Augustines Church in Wilmette where he will be laid to rest in the columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made in Tim's honor to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church or to the Hospice Foundation of America
