Eugene, Ind. - Thomas Burnell Axtell, 82, left this earthly life on June 20, 2015 at 5:30 a.m. EDT at his residence, making his last sawdust. Born in Attica, Indiana on October 31, 1932, but his mother didn't want Tommy to have a Halloween birthday, so she had his birth certificate changed to November 1. Born to George and Emma East Axtell. The 4th son and 6th child. He married Dorothy Joan Gebhart on January 2, 1953 in Eugene, Indiana. From this marriage they had five children, Stephen Ray Axtell of Eugene, Indiana; Joan Etta(Joetta) and Gabe Hathaway of Eugene, Indiana; George Thomas Axtell (Deceased); Thomas Brent and Amy Axtell of Cayuga, Indiana and Cary Louann and Walter Jones, Sr. of Eugene, Indiana; Grandchildren, Erica and Jason Wright; Brant and Sarah Hathaway; Eliza and David Porter; Derryn and Carol Axtell; Walter Jones, Jr; Joseph Jones; Paxton Axtell; Deakin Axtell and Benjamin Jones; Great Grandchildren, MaKaylee and Gabriel Wright; Thomas and Andrew Porter, and Brantley Hathaway and baby Porter in January; sister, Peggy Yoho of Eugene, Indiana; brother, Phillip Axtell of Eugene, Indiana; sister-in-laws, Carma Axtell of Eugene, Indiana and Marilyn and Frank Whittington of Kingman, Indiana, and many cousins, nieces and nephews whom he was their favorite uncle. He was preceded in death by his son, George Thomas Axtell; granddaughter, Emma Grace; great grandson, Isaiah Jones; brothers, Robert, Jackie and Richard; sisters, Ella, Frances and Iris; step sister, Mary and stepbrother, Eldon. Tom was in the Army during the Korean War from 1953 thru 1955, serving in the infantry. He retired from General Motors where he worked for 30 years. He was a grinder and later a time keeper. His clock number was 2322. He was a non active member of the Eugene United Methodist Church, and a life member of the Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post #263. He was very active with the Eugene Harvest Days, acting as their president. Thomas was a self taught wood worker and made many heirloom pieces of furniture for his family and friends. He was also an avid gardener and always started his plants in the early spring. Dad was a very quiet and intelligent man, he never said much but always knew what was going on, and when he did say something you had better listen! Private family graveside services were held Monday, June 22, 2015 at Eugene Cemetery in Eugene, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Jon Overbey; Military rites were conducted by the Cayuga American Legion Post #263. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana assisted the family with arrangements.
