Sylvia E. Switzer

We called her mom, Grandma, "Big G" and G.G. You called her friend. Its with heavy hearts we announce that Sylvia E. Switzer went to be with the Lord Thursday July 20th in Indianapolis. While our hearts are heavy and we miss her so much already, we rejoice in knowing that she is walking with the Lord in heaven. No more pain and no more tears. She was battling an illness over the last 2 months valiantly to the point that her grandkids changed her moniker from "Big G" to "Tough G." The doctors only gave her a less than 40% chance of surviving the surgery. But she did. They gave her less than 40% chance of recovering. But she did. They didnt believe she would leave the hospital and a week later she was wheeled out and on her way to rehab. A miracle and a gift. The gift for me is I had a good solid week of time to just be with her to talk and laugh. And maybe because deep down we knew the time was short, we told each other often that we loved each other. When I would leave she would tell me again, I would respond with I love you too. And it would end with her telling me "I love you more!" While she seemed to be on the path to recovery unfortunately her body just couldnt respond. God took her home peacefully with her family gathered around her.

My mom was born in Oakwood, Illinois on April 18th 1941, was a graduate of Westville High School and made her home in Danville Illinois. From her humble beginnings she worked her way up to becoming traffic manager at Tridan in Danville before she retired. She enjoyed her friendships in Danville including bus trips, book club and the Garden Club. She held company at home with her two dogs Max and Missy.

She had 2 sons, Greg McFarland, who preceded her in Death, and me, Stephen McFarland of Indianapolis. She also had the daughter she always wanted in my wife Sue who both became best friends. A unique mother-in-law relationship but one cherished on both sides. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Switzer, mother Madelyn Kluchar, brother Robert Kluchar and stepdaughters Jan Switzer, Debbie Jorgenson and Pam Ringus. She is survived by her brother David Kluchar of Champaign and Stepson Mike Forbeck (Carol) and their son Ryan. Also survived by Austin and Luke who are children of Pam and Debbie, respectively.

Her biggest love and joy of her life was being with her 3 grandchildren and their spouses and her 6 great-grandchildren at family functions in Indianapolis. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Elyse Causey (Mitchell) and their 3 children Marshall, Cubby, and Effie. Blake McFarland (Dr Jill Albee-McFarland) and their children Stevie, Crew and Tag. And Matthew McFarland and his wife Mandy now living in Charleston, SC.

Please join us Wednesday, July 26, 2023 from 10-11 am as we greet guests at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville. A celebration of her life will take place at 11 am. Burial will be directly afterwards at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Oakwood where she will be buried next to her son Greg, Brother Bob and Mother Madelyn. She is reunited with loved ones in Heaven and we know that we will see her soon as well.
