Mahomet - Steven J. Parker, 74, of Mahomet passed away at his home at 9:15 AM on December 26, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born on May 6, 1941 in Champaign, IL to James F. and Leona (Tjardes) Parker. He married Pamela Duncan on January 22, 1966 in Monticello. She survives. Also surviving are two children, Kathy Parker of Mahomet and Rob (Kris) Parker, also of Mahomet; a brother, Dan (Carol) Parker of Longview; two grandchildren, Kami and Lawson Parker; and two nephews, Shane and Todd Parker. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Steve was a one of a kind, self-made man who dabbled in several careers and enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He learned all about hard work at the side of Danny Tharp at the Mahomet Feed Mill as a kid. His first "corporate" job after working for his family's grain elevator was with the First National Bank in Champaign. Steve also bought out and operated the H & H Sinclair gas station, ran Parker Oil Company, and most recently served as the Corporation President for United Fuel. Even well into "retirement" he ran his own business grading yards. This turned into a passion for collecting and restoring Ford Tractors. Aside from his varied business ventures, Steve served his country in the Illinois National Guard during Vietnam and was a member of the American Legion Post #1015. He served on the Corn Belt Fire Department for 32 years, acting as Fire Chief for a year. He was Chairman of the Board with the Community Bank of Mahomet until it was acquired by Busey Bank, and was a charter member of the Mahomet Lion's Club. Steve had a passion for sign painting and mentored with Bill Kite of Kite signs. A dream was realized when Steve painted 8 Indy Cars, one for Mickey Thompson. Another great love of his was collecting and restoring Ford Tractors. He enjoyed travelling the US to tractor shows, and was a longtime key member of the Ford Fordson Collectors Association and the I & I Tractor Club. Steve's family would like to invite those who knew him to a celebration of his life at 11 AM on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Mahomet United Methodist Church. Pastor John Macintosh will officiate. The family would like you to stay following the service for a meal for sharing fellowship and stories with friends. Memorials may be made to the Mahomet United Methodist Church. Sunset's Champaign-Urbana Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Please join Steve's family in sharing memories, photos, and video of his life through his tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
