It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steven Dale Lyons on November 27, 2024 at the Illiana VA Medical Center in Danville, IL., following complications with PLS. Steve was born in Danville, IL., on Dec. 9, 1952 to the late Harry and Betty (Lister) Lyons.
Steve attended Danville High School and after graduating, enlisted in the US Navy and married his first wife Patty Lanter. Together they had two sons: Nik (Kate) of LeRoy, IL, and Charles (Elisha) of Evansville, IN. They later divorced and in 1983 he married Karen Jennings (Ridens) and they had one son: William (Scott) of Hidden Valley Lake, CA.
Steve retired from the IRS in Bloomington, IL after 40 years of government service. He loved nothing more than spending time with the family and grandchildren sitting by an outdoor fire telling stories, or fishing, golfing and bowling. He loved to play cards, especially poker, and anything where you could place a bet. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys, Boston Red Sox, and Formula 1 fan.
In 2018, Steve was diagnosed with PLS which greatly impaired his ability to communicate and compromised his mobility.
He is survived by his three sons and 3 sisters: Jan, Betsy (John) Morgenroth and Kathy all of Tilton, IL and one brother: Randy of Home Gardens, as well as four amazing grandchildren: Alex (Tia), and Mathew Lyons of Evansville, IN., and Abby and Austin Lyons of LeRoy, IL., and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his furry best friends: Shiloh and Mosby and his grand dogs: Riley, Ellie and Milo. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers: Harry Michael of Danville, and Bruce of Phoenix AZ.
Services will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 at St. Mary’s Church in Westville, IL presided by Fr. David Whiteside (a longtime friend). Rosary will be at 10 am followed by visitation from 10:30- 11:30 am and Mass at 11:30 am. Burial will be at the Danville VA Cemetery at 1pm with military honors.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, IL and especially the staff of Independence Home at the Illiana VA Medical Center in Danville, IL. Their loving care and support will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the ALS Association and/or Wounded Warriors.
Sunset Funeral Home’s Urbas Chapel and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements. Please share fond memories and condolences with his family on his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
