Stephen E. Leverich, 70, of Danville, passed away on November 9, 2021, at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center, Danville IL . Stephen was born on January 18, 1951 in Danville, Illinois, the son of the late Patricia and Louis Leverich. He was preceded in death by his longtime partner, Louise Gergel.
Survivors include his 5 sisters, Marcia (Fred) Basolo, Bloomington; Gail Leverich, Bloomington; Cindy Leverich, Danville; Karen Cross (Robin Adams) Danville; and Laura Caudill, Westville and 6 nieces and nephews, Tricia (Kip) Hayden, Angela (Eddie) Navarro, Melissa (Matt) Simpson, Michael Rice, Andrew Caudill, Ashley (Braydn) Budde. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews.
Stephen lead a life of service to others and was involved in scouting for over 40 years. He was the Scoutmaster for Troop 101 and 517 and Committee Member for Troop 90, mentoring scouts and providing adventures of a lifetime. Other leadership roles included being District Commissioner, Program Director, Board Member of the Camping Committee and Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow as well as numerous other advisory roles.
Steve was an Amateur Radio Operator for over 55 years, earning numerous certifications and recognitions. His call sign was W9IK. Steve was also a member of the Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS), a volunteer organization with the mission to support multiple agencies and organization through the Department of Defense during situations of national emergencies. Membership is an honorable contribution to our nations well-being. With his call sign of AL9AAD, Steve communicated with people from all around the world and enabled servicemen to talk with their families in the states. Steve became lifelong best friends with Dennis Semonick and Don Russell through the Amatuer Radio Club and activities.
While living in Mississippi for 17 years Steve was the 2010 Emergency Communication Coordinator for the Red Cross.
Steve favorite jobs were those in Surveillance and Security. He was the Lead Security Officer at Valley Casino. After he was promoted to Supervisor of Security, Steve then landed a position in Security at the Elviss Graceland Mansion. There he met people from all around the world and felt very fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of this organization. It was said that Steve was the very best Security Agent that was ever employed at Graceland.
Steve loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his father at a young age. In addition, Steve enjoyed watching westerns and war movies. Steve also had a love of animals and owned a number of dogs and cats throughout the years. Steve will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, November 16 in the Chapel at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Danville, IL. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
