Sophie Van Duyn

Sophie Van Duyn, age 86, of Danville, passed away at 11:29 am on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at her home. She was born January 17, 1923 in Indianapolis, IN the daughter of Frank and Frances (Potochnick) Smerdel. Sophie married Herschel Dwight Van Duyn on September 25, 1943 in Danville. He preceded her in death on July 29, 1980. Sophie is survived by one daughter: Cecelia Jean Smith of Danville; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter: Sarah Jane Hench, three brothers, one sister, and three half brothers. Sophie graduated from Danville High School. She worked at A&W and Marty K restaurants before becoming a stay at home babysitter. She enjoyed embroidering, doing puzzle books, and camping with her husband. She loved to walk, especially at the Mall. Sophie was a past member of the Eastern Star. A celebration of the life of Sophie Van Duyn will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home of Danville. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in Sophies name to either the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or the Alzheimers Assoication.
