Shirley Ritter,88, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at her daughter's home. Born on September 8, 1937, in Summer Shade, Kentucky, Shirley lived a life marked by dedication, love, and a deep connection to the simple joys of nature and family.
Throughout her life, Shirley demonstrated a strong work ethic, having contributed many years at GE in the factory. Her commitment to her work was only matched by her passion for gardening, a hobby she treasured throughout her life. She especially cherished her roses in the yard, finding great pride and joy in their blooms. Alongside her love for flowers, Shirley enjoyed gambling, watching the birds in her garden, and, most importantly, spending quality time with her family.
Shirley’s family remembers her as a woman who found happiness in nurturing both her garden and her loved ones. Her proudest accomplishments were intricately tied to the beauty she cultivated in her flowers, symbolizing the care and attention she generously extended to everyone around her.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Ritter; children Lenny (Roberta) Ritter, Debbie (Michael) Pollock, grandchildren Nikki (Eric) Nelson; Bryan (Kaitlyn) Lawson, Michael (Kim) Pollock, Tammy Buckman, and Kaitlyn Ritter; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren. Shirley also leaves behind her sister Helen O’Brien and brother Wayne Birge.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Ace and Viola Birge; her son, Gregory Ritter; and her sisters Sandy Keeling, Delores Pollock, and Jacquiline Arthion.
Family and friends are invited to honor Shirley’s memory at a Celebration of Life followed by a service on May 16, 2026, at the Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, located at 414 S State St, Westville, Illinois. The visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed immediately by the service at 4:00 p.m. Please join the family in sharing pictures, videos, and memories on her tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com
Shirley Ritter's legacy of love, kindness, and passion for life’s simple pleasures will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a garden of memories blooming in the hearts of her family and friends.
