Shirley Ann (Calvert) King of Oakwood went home to be with Jesus on March 3, 2025. She was born on December 3, 1942 in Danville, IL the daughter of Auda F and Mina Anderson Calvert. She grew up with three brothers – Mack, Gene and Paul at the family farm. Ann married Alvis Cleo King on October 7, 1961, one month after learning she had ovarian cancer at the age of 18. Through her faith, she was healed and was able to celebrate 59 years of marriage with Cleo.
The Lord blessed Ann and Cleo with two children, Troy (Gretchen) King and Julie (Duane) Webb. The have six grandchildren – Katie (A.J.), Ethan (Emily), Zack (Ashley), Bethany (Tyler), Emmons (Libby), Ashley-Joy (Justin); and eleven great-grandchildren – Aurora, Norah, Marlo, Raveyn, Emmersyn, Weston, Tilly, Grady, Ryan, Houston and Alvis.
Ann attended Newtown school when it was a one-room schoolhouse and was the first graduating class of the “new” Newtown school building. She graduated from Oakwood High School, Danville Beauty School, and obtained her CNA certification from DACC. As a teen, she worked at Kresge’s and Kmart. She babysat Bob and Linda Adams’ children and her grandchildren. Ann was the primary caregiver for both of her parents and she retired from Oakwood School District CUSD #76.
Ann and Cleo had a strong Christian faith. She volunteered in various capacities in the Nazarene Church and three nursing homes for 39 years. She and Cleo hosted various gospel sings at their home and together they would attend local car shows and were members of various car clubs. She also enjoyed crocheting, chocolate, shopping, collecting cookbooks and making noodles.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Burial will be in Newtown Cemetery. Cherri Pettice will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, March 7, 2025 at the funeral home in Danville.
Memorials may be made in Shirley’s memory to Fair Hope Childrens’ Ministry.
