Shirley Haddix

Shirley Haddix, 84, of Chrisman, Illinois, received her wings and answered the call to go home with God, on September 14, 2024. Shirley was born February 25, 1940, in rural Edgar County, the daughter of Alvin and Rosa (Chapman) Ketchem. She married Charles “Bud” Haddix on July 8, 1959. They shared over 54 years together before Bud’s passing in 2013.

Shirley was raised on the farm north of Metcalf. After Bud served in the United States Army they set up a house in Virgina, Illinois and then Mason City, Iowa before returning to Chrisman. Bud’s work took them to Mexico, Missouri early in 1972, later that year they got the opportunity to return to the farm Shirley had grown up on. They remained as farm operator tenants for forty years until Bud passed.

During that time Shirley worked as a bookkeeper for Chrisman Farm Center, also keeping the records for the farm and balancing the check book. Over the years she wore many hats on the farm, she could be seen operating the combine, or hauling grain to the elevator until her arthritis became bad enough to limit those duties. Shirley was an awesome cook and was known for bringing delicious hot lunches to the field and always feeding the farm help. In later years the hat she wore most proudly was that of Grandmother. She often could be caught delivering lunches or forgotten gym socks to the school or picking up sick kids and taking them to a doctor’s appointment. Nan as she affectionally became known by the kids. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a special place in her heart for each one of them.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bud, two brothers Russel and Herschel Ketchem, and a sister Barbra Todd.

Shirley is survived by her children; Bryan (Sheryl) Haddix of Chrisman, and Melinda Haddix of Danville, four grandchildren Ryan Bildilli (Ashley Haga), Kayla (Tim) Miller, Kaleb (Holly) Haddix, and Kelsy Dudley, twelve great grandchildren and 0ne great great granddaughter.

Shirley will be remembered for her belief in God and service to her family. Shirley was a delight to be around and always had time for others. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family suggests memorials be made in Shirley’s name to Hospice of Wabash Valley.

A visitation will be held at Chrisman Christian Church on Thursday September 19, 2024, from 11-1pm. Service will be at the church at 1pm, with Troy Warner officiating.
