Shelby Jay Liggett III, 51, of Danville, IL. formerly of Tilton, passed away at 7:38 am Saturday January 2, 2016 at Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL. Shelby was born April 18, 1964 in Danville, the son Shelby J. and Caroline S. (Freed) Liggett Jr. Shelby is survived by his parents; sisters, Sue Marzbannia of Danville, Cheryl (Kenneth) Reynolds of Tilton and Cathy Thorne of Danville; four nieces and a nephew; five great nieces and three great nephews; several cousins; an aunt and friends. After high school, Shelby entered the U.S. Marine Corps June 28, 1982. Serving in San Diego, CA. through boot camp. He was first transferred to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for basic automotive mechanics training. He was later transferred to 29 Palms, CA. to serve as a diesel mechanic and in Marine Integrated Maintenance Management Systems with transfers to serve in Okinawa, Japan, Korea and Quantico, VA., before returning to 29 Palms to finish his term. Shelby served his country for six years earning a medal for; good conduct, sharp shooter and letter of appreciation for devotion to duty, iniative and vital support. He served as Sergeant of the Guard swim and hand to hand combat instructor advancing to Corporal through his honorable discharge in May 1988. After his discharge he worked for Big John's Jeep in 29 Palms, as a mechanic. He returned home in 1996, working as a chemical compounder at CCL Custom Products, then as a press operator and welder at Famaco CORP. He has been a welder at Danville Metal Stamping since November 16, 1998. Shelby enjoyed; fishing, hunting, camping, mushroom hunting and working on his many building and maintenance projects. He was also a fan of Star Trek Series and playing Euchre. He enjoyed several summers as a teen volunteering for Muscular Dystrophy Association camp and in recent years donated his hair to Locks of Love. He was baptized into The Lord at Southside Church of Christ on November 25, 1973 and became a member of Faith Church of Christ on March 2, 2003. A Celebration of Shelby's life will be held on Wednesday January 6, 2016 at 10am at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville. With burial at Danville National Cemetery. A visitation will take place on Tuesday January 5, 2016 at 5pm - 7pm. Memorials may be made in Shelby's name to; Diabetes Foundation, American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
