Tilton Shelby J. Liggett, Jr, 81, of Tilton passed away at 6:35 AM on February 8, 2021 at the Waters in Covington.
Shelby was born on February 22, 1939 in Tilton the son of Shelby J. and Ettabelle (Kizer) Liggett, Sr. He married Caroline S. Freed on November 14, 1958 in Danville and she survives of Tilton.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline Liggett of Tilton, three daughters, Sue Marzbannia of Danville, IL, Cheryl (Kenneth) Reynolds of Tilton, IL, and Cathy Kamplain of Danville, IL, five grandchildren, Sadie (Andrew) Huckstadt, Sara Marzbannia, Brian Reynolds, Stefani (Nate) Phillips and Samantha Kamplain as well as eight great grandchildren.
Shelby is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Shelby Liggett, III, one brother Ivan Liggett, one sister Yvonne Brown, and one son-in-law Wesley Kamplain.
Shelby was a Danville High School graduate and served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1957 to 1965. He worked at the Grab-It-Here Grocery as Manager & Field Auditor from 1958 to 1971. He then worked as a Metal Fabricator and Foreman at Famaco Corp in Tilton until his retirement in 1994. After retiring, he worked a brief time at the Independent News in Georgetown, where he was congratulated for successful sales.
He is a member of Faith Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and enjoyed participating in bible study and fellowship celebrations. Even as his memory faded, he could sing full hymns without missing a word or looking at a song book. He enjoyed spending his free time traveling, working in his garden and making woodcraft projects for his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed family gatherings during the holidays and playing fast games of euchre all night, or enjoying the pursuit of playing 'marbles' better known as aggravation. Shelby was a feisty gentleman, devoted husband to Caroline, and father who cherished his children and grand-children.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St., Danville, Illinois 61834. Bill Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at the funeral home.
It is kindly requested that those in attendance of the visitation or services wear a mask and practice social distancing.
