Catlin Sandra E. (Howie) Smith, 83, of Catlin, passed away at 5:05 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2024. She was born June 30, 1940 to James S. and Pauline (Romine) Emery. She married the love of her life, James K. Howie, on May 10, 1958 in Paris, IL. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by three children, Kevin (Debbra) Howie of Savoy, Karen (Tim) Haslett of New Port Richey, FL, and Kristin (Neil) Yelenick of Catlin, IL; four grandchildren, Lindsey Brown, Amanda Holk, Zachary Yelenick, and Joseph Yelenick; two great grandchildren, Maxwell and Mason; brother, James S. Emery III; and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Judy Nabors, Carole Farkas, and Tammy Clauson.
Sandy was a DHS graduate and went on to earn her certificate as an LPN. She later worked in food service and catering before beginning her career as the Health Inspector for the City of Danville. She served her community in that role until her retirement in 2002. Earlier in her life, Sandy enjoyed reading historical fiction and especially enjoyed drinking coffee and visiting with her sisters. She also liked to go antiquing and frequently attended the Vermilion County Christian Womens Group meetings. Sandy could often be found working in her flower garden and always looked forward to vacationing in her favorite spot, Longboat Key, FL. Most of all, Sandy loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

A service to celebrate the life of Sandra E. (Howie) Smith will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Chaplain Andrea Beyke will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM prior to the service on Wednesday, also at Sunset in Danville. Memorials in Sandys name may be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital or Carle Hospice.
