Sam “Fagen” Schulman Samuel Schulman, 98, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2013 in Danville, IL. He was born in New York, NY on November 15, 1914 to Yael and Ida Schulman. Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville, IL on Thursday, August 15 from 1 - 2:30 pm. A funeral will follow at 2:30 at Sunset Funeral Home followed by a burial ceremony at Springhill Cemetery. Sam served his country during World War II in the Navy, worked at the New York Worlds Fair during the depression, and worked for the US Postal Service. He also owned and operated Fagen Auto Parts in Danville for many years. Sam was a long term resident of Danville, where he moved in 1950 to marry Bess (Fagen) Schulman, his beloved wife. Bess and Sam were married for 48 years and were devoted to each other until her death in 1998. Sam and Bess Schulman operated Fagen Auto Parts until their retirement in 1971. He never forgot a face from the store during his many years serving the community. A car guy at heart, Sam was known to be able to “fix” anything. He was affectionately known as “Sammy” or “Mr. Fagen” by many. Sam lived in Danville for 42 years after retirement and led a full and active life. He was able to pursue his many interests that included oil painting, reading, travelling, and volunteering. He was an active member of the Danville Art League and Congregation Israel, and volunteered by teaching adult literacy through local programs. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family in Danville - nephew Ken Salomon, Tonya Salomon, and their children Peyton, Jolene, and Lillian. Sam was preceded in death by his parents Yael and Ida Schulman, wife Bess (Fagen) Schulman, brothers Jack, Murray, and Philip Schulman. He is survived by sisters-in law Jeanette Horowitz of FL and Judith Klingman of FL; nephews and nieces including Ken (Tonya) Salomon of Danville, Steve (Carol) Schulman of NY, Susan Schulman of CA, Ellen (Tom) Lemberger of OH, David (Dominica) Rossman of CA, David and Miriam Schulman of FL, Harvey Schulman of GA, Eileen Tyson of FL; and many great nephews and nieces. Sam will be missed by many. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Sam be given to the Danville Art League, the Danville Public Library, or the charity of your choice.
