Gessie, Ind. - Samuel Gibson Hughes, 69, of Gessie, passed away at 7:52 p.m. CST Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, Illinois. He was born July 28, 1942 in Danville, Illinois, the son of the late Harold Martin and Mary Mildred Gibson Hughes. He first married Peggy Jo Conrad on June 24, 1962 in Gessie, Indiana. She preceded him in death on March 12, 1988. He later married Diane E. Orr on July 22, 1990 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Beth(Jeff)Bender of Lafayette, Indiana; Samuel Scott(Jennifer Peverly)Hughes of Covington, Indiana; Angie(Mike)Swank of Waynetown, Indiana and Becky Cadman of Greenwood, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Kristen; Brock; Blake; Caley; Sami; Taylor and Kenzie; two brothers, Jim(Rosemary)Hughes and Kent(Janet)Hughes both of Gessie, Indiana. He was preceded in death by one brother, Chris Hughes and a nephew, Norman "Fuzz" Hughes. Samuel was a retired mechanic from Gibson Motors in Perrysville, Indiana. He was a 1960 graduate of Perrysville High School. Samuel was a member of the Gessie United Methodist Church. He was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, Indiana University Basketball and Chicago Bears. Samuel enjoyed gardening, mushrooming, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren, family and many friends. Funeral services: 2 p.m. EST Thursday, December 22, 2011 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor James Lawson; Burial: Hopewell Cemetery near Gessie, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EST Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
