Samuel (Sam) Ellsworth Cox, 88, of Danville, IL, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 2, 2024, at the Danville Veterans Administration Independence Home for Palliative Care, where he had resided since May 22, 2024.
Sam was born November 5, 1935, in Danville, IL to the late Everett and Dorothy Mae Stewart Cox. Sam was raised mainly by his paternal Grandma, Glenna Daniels Ihrcke. He married Sally Katherine Doan Chesnut on May 21, 1994; she preceded him in death on August 9, 2016.
Survivors include his son, Monte Cox and granddaughter, Jenni Cox of Danville, IL.
He is also survived by brothers-in-law Jack Doan of Danville, IL, Tom (Mickey) Doan of Wheaton, IL, Dan (Debbie) Doan of Sorrento, FL, and Pat (Becky) Doan of Chiefland, FL; sisters-in-law Mary Sadler of Tilton, IL, Jean (Steve) Wheeler of Danville, IL, and Julie Allison of Danville, IL; also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces. Julie provided Sam with an extraordinary amount of love and support since Sally passed away.
In addition to his parents and wife, Sam was preceded in death by his sister Betty Sue Cox Kreidler of Scottsdale, AZ and brother-in-law Dave Allison of Danville, IL.
Sam attended Danville High School and then enlisted in the United States Navy, and he was a proud Veteran. A few years ago, he was able to go to Washington, DC on the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight; it was a trip he cherished.
Sam held a variety of jobs including working at Allith-Prouty, Chuckles, and Village Mall Security.
He was past Commander of Danville American Legion Post 210 and served on the Honor Guard until his health didnt allow him to continue.
Sam was an avid sports fan and rooted for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Bears, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Sam had many friends, including Buddy Wright of Oakwood, IL, with whom he shared a special bond. He enjoyed the company of his fellow tenants at Vermilion House visiting and playing cards.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Danville VA, to his caregiver for the past year, Fredrika Pharr, and to his many friends for their care and concern for Sam over the years.
A visitation will be held from 9-11 am on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion, Danville, IL. A service will follow at 11 am at the funeral home.
Per Sams wishes, he will be cremated and laid to rest with Sally at the Danville National Cemetery. There will be a private service with Military Honors.
