Sally Ruth Mergenthaler, 70, of Champaign, passed at Carle Hospital on Saturday, December 15th. Sally was born on November 18th, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Jack and Dorothy Poticha. She graduated from Senn High School in Chicago, and The University of Illinois, where she met her husband, Paul Mergenthaler. She graduated with a degree in English Literature. She later graduated from Parkland College with a Nursing Degree. She was a registered nurse for 20 years. She worked at Carle Hospital, and for Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education where she cared for special needs students. She was a life long avid reader and volunteered as a reading coach, a reading tutor and in adult literacy programs. She also volunteered at the Crisis Nursery. She is survived by her husband, her sister Carole King, of Buffalo Grove, IL and brother Ronald Poticha, of New Orleans, LA, and her four children, Dayna Mergenthaler-Noland of Raleigh, NC, Adam Mergenthaler of Chicago, IL, Brian Mergenthaler of Durham NC, Susan Mergenthaler-Connaughton of Durham, NC and her grandchildren, Jack and Emma Noland. As per her wishes, Sally was cremated and private family services are being held. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center Champaign- Urbana Chapel 710 N. Neil St. is handling her arrangements.
