Sadie Allene Sanders, 90, of Danville, passed away at 5:24 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Danville, with her daughters by her side. Sadie was born on July 9, 1919 in McCleansboro, Illinois, the daughter of Herschel and Effie (Hedges) Hicks. She married Woodrow Sanders on February 25, 1938 in Henderson, Kentucky. Sadie was a devoted wife for 53 years. Woodrow preceded her in death on January 30, 1992. She is survived by her son- Keith W. (Jan) Sanders of Spencer, Indiana; three daughters- Carolyn Joyce Bennett of Litchfield, Illinois, Janet Jeanenne (Eric) Goodwin of Danville and Barbara JoAnne (Neil) Andrews of Alvin; two sisters Wilma Sloan of Summerfield, North Carolina and June Burgess of Tucson, Arizona; 10 grandchildren- Rayetta (Mark) Hoover, Rhonda (Dave) Young, Dale (Vicky) Mullen, Kent (Danielle) Mullen, Beth Goodwin, Erica Cordes, Rick (Karen) Ralston, Julie (Jim) Brain, Cody Sanders and Shawn (Candice) Sanders; 18 great-grandchildren- Christopher Hoover, Monte Hoover, Brandon Hoover, Amelia Hoover, Bryan Young, Nicole Young, Jacob Mullen, Thomas Mullen, Jenna Mullen, Kendall Mullen, Kirk Ralston, Reid Ralston, Rebekah Ralston, Brent Brain, Belinda Brain, Caleb Cordes, Devin Sanders and Kailey Sanders; and two great-great grandchildren- Kailon and Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister- Edna Cluck. As a child, Sadie attended a small one room school house in Southern Illinois, three and a half miles from the small town of Walpole. There was a high school, two grocery stores, feed store and a post office. Sadie was baptized at 13 years of age in a very murky farm pond and has remained a faithful Christian ever since. Sadie graduated from Galatia High School and later attended Terre Haute School of Cosmetology. A 19 year old farm girl Sadie and a 26 year old farm boy Woodrow were married and had four children. Sadie attended East Park Church of Christ in Danville and previously attended Northside Church of Christ in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was a regular vacation bible school teacher every year and taught nursery class. Sadie enjoyed collecting dolls and going to doll auctions. Her dolls even had their own room to be displayed in. She enjoyed reading, listening to country music, especially the Melody Boys records. Sadie knitted many sweaters in high school for herself and her friends and used to embroider but slowed down due to her eye sight. She enjoyed traveling with her friends. She was also a wonderful cook. She made a lot of sugarless pies for church fellowship and said before becoming a diabetic, she would eat anything that didnt eat her. Sadie was blessed to have many friends and spent her lifetime doing good for others. She loved to spend as much time as she could with her grandchildren. Each one of them would spend part of their summer with her. She was a fulltime homemaker with a beauty shop in her home for 19 years. Sadie watched over her family for over 70 years and was a worthy woman in every sense of the word according to Proverbs 31 verses 27-31. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her. A Celebration of the Life of Sadie Allene Sanders will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, with Pastor Dennis Floyd officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hickory Hills Cemetery in McCleansboro, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Carle Hospice in Sadies name.
