Danville- Ruth M. Black, 86, of Danville passed away on February 17, 2013 at the Hill Crest Nursing Home in Owensboro, KY. She was born on June 14, 1926 in Mellott, IN to George William and Eva E. Newkirk Haxton. She married Robert S. Black on May 9, 1948. He preceded her in death on February 25, 2010. She is survived by her four children, James (Tia) Black of Danville, Dennis (Laura) Black of Covington, IN, Karl (Jeanine) Black of St. Joseph, IL and Joetta (Denny) Lee of Owensboro, KY; a sister-in-law Gladys Haxton of Lafayette, IN; eight grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son Lowell, two daughters, Dorothy and Nancy, and a brother, Dale Haxton. Ruth had worked as a lab tech for St. Elizabeth Hospital, continuing work at Lakeview until her retirement. Throughout her years of membership at Second Church of Christ in Danville, she was involved in numerous church activities - starting a children's church, playing the piano, and serving as a Sunday School officer. Ruth loved her family and grandkids, and was devoted to helping others. She had a quiet strength, and through a strong faith helped those around her. She tirelessly worked behind the scenes, baking, babysitting, or caring for others that she could help. A service to celebrate the life of Ruth Black will be held at 10 AM on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Drew Mentzer will officiate. Burial will follow at Osborn Prairie Cemetery in Van Buren Township, IN. Visitation will be held from 4-8 PM on Thursday, February 21, also at Sunset in Danville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Second Church of Christ Library or Music Programs.
