Rusty Smith

Rusty Lane Smith, 68, of Newport passed away on December 24, 2024 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was born on March 21, 1956 in Colorado Springs to Conrad and Zelma (Miller) Smith. He was a graduate of Ramona High School and most recently worked at Langley Trucking for nearly a decade.

Rusty will forever be remembered as the good man, great dad, and wonderful grandpa he was. He touched the hearts of everyone he met with his infectious smile and sparkling eyes, which were windows into a soul full of love and compassion. He was a dedicated family man; he enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids and enjoyed taking care of his mom. He looked forward to riding his Harley every opportunity he was given and could often be found watching a NASCAR race.

He was preceded in death by his father Conrad Smith, his ex-wife Nikki Ragor, his brother Sandy, and his nephew Conrad Smith II.

Rusty is survived by his mother, Zelma Smith of Newport; his children Audrey Smith (John Butts) of Veedersburg, Alina (Glenn) Zentz of Danville, and Caleb Smith of Clinton; and his grandchildren Haley, Glenn, Nathaniel, Aubrey, Kalina, Citrus, and Tink. He also leaves behind his great-grandson Glenn, niece Trish, and many dear friends.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 from 1 -2 pm EST at Sunset Funeral Home’s DeVerter Chapel, located at 215 N. Division Street in Cayuga. A funeral service celebrating his life will follow the visitation at 2 pm, also at the funeral home, with Ramona Trover officiating. He will be laid to rest at Lower Mound Cemetery.
