Russell “Russ” F. McMillan, Jr, 76 of Westville, IL passed away at 10:44 PM on October 11, 2024 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.
Russ was born on August 4, 1948 the son of Russell F. and Thelma Jane (Osborne) McMillan, Sr in Cincinnati, OH. He married Lutitia “Tish” F. Wells in Danville, IL on October 2, 1971 and she survives.
Survivors include his wife, Tish McMillan of Westville, IL, son, Adam (Valorie) McMillan of Warsaw, IN, his grandchildren, Charlie, Brennan and Miranda Mattern all of Bremen, IN, Alex (Lea) Meister of Westville, IL and Gracie Meister of Pearl Harbor, HI. Russ is also survived by his sister, Pam (Paul) Plunkett of Lawrenceburg, IN and son-in-law, Dustin (Mindi) Mattern of Bremen, IN.
Russ is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Heather Sue Mattern and brother, Dan McMillan.
Russ was a 1966 graduate from Danville High School and continued his education by enlisting in the United States Navy. He served two years active duty as a boiler technician on the USS Brownson (DD-868) and four years active reserves at Great Lakes Naval Station.
Most recently Russ and his son Adam owned and operated McMillan Appliance, Inc. located in Westville, IL for 21 years from 2001 until his retirement in 2022.
Russ believed in our Lord God and his Son Jesus Christ and attended Nappanee Missionary Church in Nappanee, IN. He was an avid reader of a wide variety of literature. He enjoyed woodworking which included everything from picture frames to furniture. Most of all, Russ enjoyed teaching his grandsons about a variety of skills. He taught them everything from woodworking to plumbing, welding and even electrical work. “Pop” would always tell the boys, “Listen and Learn.”
Russ was such a humble, giving, skillful and wonderful man. He gave his time and knowledge to help others. He could build and fix anything, and he taught others to do the same. People always valued his knowledge and wisdom.
Russ was a wonderful husband to Tish for 53 years, father, and grandfather that will be missed dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Pastor Dave Engbrecht will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 PM on Friday, October 18, 2024 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made in Russ’ memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
