Russell E. Reed

Russell E. Reed, 87, of Covington, Indiana, passed away with his loving family by his side on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Franciscan Health in Lafayette, Indiana, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born on May 27, 1937, in Danville, Illinois, son of the late William and Dorothy Eileen Myers.  

Survivors include his children: Linda (Andy) Knecht, Leslie (Dan) Roman, and Russell (Jenifer) Reed; his grandchildren: Ricki (Austin) Coyle, Ranee (Justin) Clyde, Cameron Reed, Kellen Reed, Cody (Faith) Knecht, Cyle Knecht, Brent (Haley) Roman, and Mitchell (Sarah) Roman; eight great-grandchildren, with one due in September; and his sister: Betty Ann Quigle. 

Along with his parents, Russell was preceded in death by an infant daughter and one brother, Hubert Reed. 

Russell was a 1956 graduate of Covington High School. After high school, he went on to serve his country faithfully and honorably in the United States Air Force. After his time in the military, Russell went on to work for CSX Railroad for 37 years before his retirement in January 2000. Russell enjoyed being outside and could often be found riding his bike or walking along the Covington Trail. He loved his Covington community, its people, and the activities it had to offer. Most of all, Russell was a family man. He could always be found on the sidelines cheering on his children and grandchildren at their events, and he was always quick to tell people how proud he was of them. 

A Celebration of Life for Russell will be held at 3PM EST on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Homes Covington Chapel, 420 3rd Street in Covington, Indiana. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Covington. Visitation will be from 1PM-3PM EST on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the funeral home in Covington.  

Memorials in Russell's name may be made to Marilyn's Village in Covington, Indiana or to the Covington City Park, with checks made payable to the City of Covington.
