Russell L. Overholt, a beloved husband and father, passed away on March 12, 2024, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. He was 89 years old.
Born on June 2, 1934, in Litchfield, Illinois, Russell was the cherished son of Leroy and Faye (Angle) Overholt. His life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering commitment. On June 15, 1957, he exchanged vows with Barbara Early, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Penfield, Illinois.
Russell’s legacy lives on through his devoted family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara, of 66 years. Together, they weathered life’s storms, sharing joys and sorrows, laughter, and tears. His children—Julie (Cliff-deceased) McCartney, David (Tracy) Overholt, Teresa (Dan) Shuma, Michael (Kim) Overholt, and Mark (Michelle) Overholt—carry forward his spirit. Russell’s guidance, wisdom, and unconditional love shaped their lives. Russell reveled in the joy of being a grandfather of nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His faith and family were everything to him.
He is also survived by his brother, David (Loretta) Overholt, Thomasboro; sisters Saundra Machnowski, Fort Wayne, IN; and Pamela (Ray) Lawrence, Monticello. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Faye, brother Larry Overholt, and sister, Wilma Busboom. Their memories lingered in his heart, a tapestry of love and longing.
Russell dedicated 46 years to the construction industry, leaving an indelible mark on the homes he helped build. But Russell’s impact extended beyond bricks and mortar. As a Webelos Leader with the Boy Scouts, he guided young minds, teaching them resilience, teamwork, and the joy of adventure. For 12 years, he graced the halls of Wiley School in Urbana, sharing knowledge and kindness with students and faculty. He was a member of St. Malachy Church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 15th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Lux Memorial Chapel in Rantoul. At 4:15 p.m., a rosary recitation will precede the visitation, a solemn tribute to Russell’s faith. On Saturday, March 16th, at 11 a.m., we will gather at St. Malachy Catholic Church, 311 W. Grove Ave., Rantoul, to celebrate his funeral Mass with memories, prayers, and gratitude.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to honor Russell’s memory through memorials to the American Heart Association or the Henry J. Smith Charitable Trust for St. Malachy School. Let us continue his legacy of love and generosity.
Russell L. Overholt’s legacy is etched in the hearts of those who knew him. His kindness, resilience, and love will continue to inspire generations. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love he generously gave.
