On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Herman Russell Moore, known to most as Russell, passed away at 1019 Belle’s Place in Crawfordsville, IN, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Russell was born on September 4, 1940, in Danville, IL to Herman and Jennie Francis (Boyd) Moore. Russell’s family travelled to many places during his childhood attending several different schools along the way; perhaps the reason that Russell made friends easily. It has been said that he never met a stranger.
In 1963, Russell married Sharron (Williams) Cote’. Russell and Sharron had two children together, Katherine and John Moore. Later Russell would marry Judy (Butterworth) Keller, where Russell gained two bonus sons, John and Jesse (JD) Keller. On July 22, 2016, Russell married Sandra (Burch) May, gaining yet another bonus son, Bryan May.
Russell lived life to the fullest. He was a kid at heart. He enjoyed the thrill of the hunt for treasures, for which he loved even more trading or selling later. A trait inherited from a long line of wheelers and dealers and passed on to future generations. Russell enjoyed camping and boating, spending a lot of time at Racoon Lake, near Rockville, IN and his second home in Winter Haven, FL. For many years, Russell was a Ham Radio operator, known by his handle “Termite.” He also enjoyed square dancing, line dancing and spent several years as a DJ, in his spare time.
Russell’s working career began at Harrison Steel in Attica, IN, as a welder. He later began a career that would see him through to retirement, in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 538, as a Journeyman Inside Wireman. His work as an electrician both challenged and fulfilled him. For many years he decorated his home for Christmas using thousands of lights, moving parts and decorations. He also volunteered his services to several elderly people in his community and for his church. Russell was an active member of First Baptist Church, a lifetime Moose member and a 55 year member of the IBEW.
Russell is survived by his loving wife, for whom we are eternally thankful, Sandra Kay Moore, his daughter Kathie (Dirk) Porter, sons John (Lisa) Moore; Jesse (Kendra) Keller, John (Jane) Keller, Bryan (Amy) May. Grandsons Drew Moore, Carson (Ava) Keller, Jaxon Keller, Graham and Luke Keller, and granddaughter Emma Keller. Great Grandson Coleman Keller. A sister Opal Craig, Sister-in-law Wanda Moore, Brother-in-law Mike (Linda) Burch, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Judy Moore, sisters Delores Elaine Moore, Mary Lou Moore, Erma (Sally) Henry, brother Robert (Bob) Moore.
Visitation for Russell will be held from 4 – 6 PM (EST) on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at First Baptist Church, 515 6th St, Covington, IN 47932. A service to celebrate his life will be held immediately following visitation at 6:00 PM (EST). Pastor Andy Harkleroad will officiate. A private burial held later at Floral Hill Cemetery, Hoopeston, IL.
