Russel O. Hathaway, 87, of Texas, formerly of Danville, passed away Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Temple, Texas. Russel was born on March 19th, 1924, in Danville, the son of Ora Otis and Virgie Bell (Holycross) Hathaway. He married Anna Marie Hathaway on July 1st, 1944, in Danville. She preceded him in death on February 26th, 1996. He is survived by a son- Steve (Alice) Hathaway of Georgetown, Texas; daughter- Sandra (John) Brooks of Rockdale, Texas; brother- Francis Hathaway of Danville; sister- Shirley (Don) Gibson of Danville; four grandchildren- Steve Hathaway, Tamara McAvoy, Ryan Brooks and Zachary Brooks; two great-grandchildren- Sean Hathaway and Morgan McAvoy; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter- Linda Hathaway and a sister- Opal Dewitt. Russel graduated from Armstrong High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during WWII in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater. He worked at Conron Inc. as a hardware salesman for several years. After they closed he began working at Latoz Hardware in Westville, until he retired. He was a member of United Church of Christ in Danville and American Legion Post#210. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and watching basketball. He especially enjoyed watching his grandson's basketball games when he visited in Texas. A Celebration of the life of Russel O. Hathaway will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4th, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home with Pastor Connie Moodie officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post #210. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
